The Franklin Office on Aging has issued a warning to the senior community
to about scams operating in our area.
- Seniors have reported callers identifying themselves as Senior Options
approved home repair contractors. Our contractors will only call you if
you have requested services. If you receive an unusual call and are
unsure if it is actually from Senior Options, refuse to provide any
information and call your case manager at (614) 462-6200 to report it. Your
case manager can help determine if the call is legitimate.
- The Ohio Attorney General warns seniors of phone or mail solicitations
asking for personal information in order to process Medicare rebate checks
which are being sent to eligible recipients who have fallen through a gap
in prescription drug coverage known as the "donut hole." Call
(800) MEDICARE for more information on the rebate checks.
- The Ohio Department of Insurance warns seniors of insurance schemes that
pressure them to purchase insurance products that are not suitable for them.
Seniors or their caregivers should contact the local police, the Ohio
Attorney General's Office at (800) 282-0515 or online at
www.speakoutohio.gov, or the Take
Action program at (800) 686-1526.
- The rise in home foreclosures has increased the number of
foreclosure-rescue scams. The Federal Trade Commission urges you to steer
clear of anyone who asks for a fee in advance to work with your mortgage
lender, guarantees to stop the foreclosure process no matter what your
circumstances, tells you not to contact your lender, lawyer, or credit or
housing counselor or tells you to make your mortgage payments directly to
it. To file a complaint or get information, visit
ftc.gov or call (877) 382-4357; TTY: (866)
653-4261.
Be aware of these scams and remember if something sounds too good to be true,
it probably is.
A no-cost registry and referral service designed to link self-employed home
care workers and seniors who need non-medical services in their homes is now
available in Franklin County. The CommunityCare Registry (CCR) is made possible
through the generous support of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, as well as,
the Franklin County Office on Aging (FCOA) and the Central Ohio Area Agency on
Aging (COAAA).
